Real estate has always been in my blood. My dad was a true salt-of-the-earth entrepreneur who, alongside his day job as a holiday resort manager, began transforming and selling properties in Zimbabwe and South Africa back in the 1960s and 1970s – long before anyone had coined the term “house flipping.”
Since I was a child, I was always fascinated by beautiful homes and by the process of making homes beautiful. Some of my fondest memories are of my dad and I poring over floorplans at the dining table, brainstorming ways to improve the design or usability of a property, or add value through an extension, a complete makeover, or simply by reimagining the spaces.
Dad would take me along to the building sites, to witness the progress, and I’d see his vision being brought to life. Those early experiences planted the seeds. I grew up seeing property not only as a home but also as a creative outlet and a vital investment in the future. By the time I was in my twenties, I had set myself a goal: to buy my first property before I turned 30.
That milestone became a reality, and while the process was challenging, it taught me invaluable lessons about research, goal-setting, discipline, and the importance of getting a foot on the property ladder. That first investment led to others and ultimately made it possible for us to live our dream of moving to Portugal.
The journey to investing in property in Lisbon, however, was not without its own unique challenges. Buying property – whether for investment or to live in – is often one of the most important financials decisions you’ll ever make. It’s also one of the most stressful and emotionally-charged. Doing that in a country you don’t know well, with a different language and culture, and different real estate regulations, practices and processes, adds a whole new level of complexity and risk, which can delay or even deter expats from moving forward with their dreams to move or buy property abroad.
Having faced and overcome those challenges myself, I’m passionate about using my experience to guide others. Today, I’m proud to be part of the team at RE/MAX Vantagem in central Lisbon, where I dedicate my work to helping international clients find the right property to buy or rent. I understand the doubts, worries, and obstacles – because I’ve lived them. I’ve also experienced the incredible sense of achievement and joy that comes when you finally hold the keys to your own home in Portugal.
