My journey to becoming a Buyer’s Agent in Lisbon began long before I moved to Portugal. It began with a dream, a plan, and a determination to secure a future in the place we’d set our hearts on.
After 14 years living in Singapore, my husband and I began thinking ahead to retirement. Portugal – and Lisbon in particular – offered everything we wanted: great climate, stunning coastline with endless water sports, outdoor lifestyle, warm and welcoming Portuguese people, a thriving international community, top-tier schools, and a rich cultural and culinary scene. The idea of having all this in a European capital city, with an international airport and the magnificent Atlantic ocean right on our doorstep, was irresistible.
We knew that if we wanted to call Portugal home one day, we needed to act early. We decided to buy an investment property as a first step, worrying that waiting until retirement might mean getting priced out of the market.
Our move to Japan during the pandemic gave us the perfect opportunity to put our plan into action. At the time I had no real estate contacts in Portugal, so I became my own Buyer’s Agent. I immersed myself in studying the Lisbon property market, researching areas that fit our lifestyle goals, noting price trends, and scouring listings every single day. Unable to travel due to Covid-19, I explored potential neighborhoods virtually, “driving” through streets using Google Street View. After a year of research and persistence, I finally found THE ONE.
Buying a property in a foreign country, sight unseen, was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. The process wasn’t as transparent or reassuring as in other countries I’d lived in, and doubts crept in at every turn. But we persevered, bought the property, managed a renovation remotely (coordinating from Japan while our project manager was in Canada!), and worked with an excellent Real Estate Agent – who I’m now proud to call my colleague – to find a lovely tenant.
This experience wasn’t just a milestone for our family – it was life-changing. It sparked a deep desire in me to help others navigate the same journey, avoiding the pitfalls and stresses that can come with buying property abroad.
Today, I’m honored to be a Buyer’s Agent at RE/MAX Vantagem, using my expertise and firsthand experience to help fellow expats find their perfect place in the sun.
